Unlike previous artists I’ve featured, John Joseco is actually a relatively competent artist. He doesn’t make any hilariously bad anatomy errors. He doesn’t have any bad OC’s. So what’s the big deal?

This man is about as imaginative and interesting as a glass of water. That’s the problem.

See, a lot of cartoons I love tokenize their female characters and, as someone who cares about representation of all sorts of people, it can get really annoying.

Imagine my joy when I started watching FiM! A show about a well-developed, interesting group of female friends! With diverse interests and goals! And they all look so cool! I kind of flipped my shit because I’m a feminist and an art student. Like, shit, I thought, imagine how they might look as people. Anyone with even rudimentary drawing skills and an interest in character design could come up with something really neat!

Or not.

I want you to look at these drawings. I know, they’re naked, it’s weird. But that’s actually excellent for what we’re about to do. Now. I want you to imagine them bald and without accessories. You are now visualizing a crowd of white clones, all with the exact same face and body type. As far as people, this is all John Joseco can draw.

Do you see the variety in the character’s he’s representing here? An athlete, a schoolteacher, a mailwoman, a fashion designer, a farmer…

Now do the bald and naked thing again.

Do you see what’s wrong with this? They all have the same physique, the same face, the same skin color. You can’t even tell their ages. Dinky looks exactly like Rarity. Mightn’t farm workers be a little more beefy, have tanned a little, have scars? Anything to differentiate them from a gradeschool teacher?

this isn’t even a matter of my headcanon vs. his headcanon. This is “John fucking Joseco doesn’t understand that shape of the body may vary slightly from person to person and if not the bodies at least MAYBE the fucking FACES??” dear god

Lyra doesn’t just have hands. She has yaoi hands. I hope that’s on purpose.

Mr. Joseco is yet another brony god who apparently has never seen a woman in real life. Like honestly, what is Lyra wearing. I feel like those shorts don’t exist.

I’m really digging the Liefeldian aversion to drawing feet in all of these pictures too.

Finally, someone who understands why circle-jerking about JJ makes me so angry.

They’re just soo diverse in my mind that when anyone else draws them, I’m hardly ever impressed.
